James Wharton was born in 1732 in Chester Co., PA. During the Revolution he was the proprietor of a rope-walk and furnished a large portion of the cordage for the vessels of the state Navy. On September 14, 1757, he married Mary Hogg the daughter of Peregrine Hogg and Mary Fitzwater Hogg. Mary was born 1718 and died September 30, 1771. They were married September 14, 1757 in Philadelphia. There were six children born to this marriage.
After Mary died James married, September 14, 1773, Christina Redd. From this marriage there was one child, Deborah Claypoole Wharton, born July 21, 1770. She married Isaac H. Jackson and died in Ohio July 04, 1854.
James died May , 1785 and was buried in Friends Ground, Philadelphia May 04, 1785.
